Tsinghua University Partners With Cloudera to Launch Big Data Talent Education Program

BEIJING, China, Aug. 8 — School of Data Science Research, Tsinghua University announced its cooperation with Cloudera, the global provider of the fastest, easiest, and most secure data management and analytics platform built on Apache Hadoop and the latest open source technologies. With the support from Cloudera Academic Partnership (CAP) program, Tsinghua University and Cloudera will jointly launch BASE (Big Analytics Skill Enablement) initiative to help fill the gap of lacking skilled data professionals in China. The cooperation is also expected to encourage more Chinese research institutions and enterprises to be actively involved in the global big data open source software communities, therefore boosting the development of big data application for enterprise and exploring the potential value of big data industry.

According to IDC research, in the next four years, big data solutions will bring a growth revenue of $1.6 trillion to the enterprises around the world. In the development of big data industry, open source ecosystems like Hadoop have become the important technical power for big data and cloud, generated large amount of users and contributors and have led technology improvement and business development. On a global scale, however, big data industry is facing a gap for skilled data professionals.

Unlike traditional computer science and business analytic courses, through CAP, School of Data Science Research, Tsinghua University and Cloudera will jointly provide free and comprehensive Hadoop curriculum to teachers and students. Students will be provided with comprehensive skill trainings, from Hadoop essentials to the cutting-edge technology in Hadoop community such as Spark, Hive and Impala. The course aims to not only bring comprehensive skills training to the students, but more importantly, these people will bring innovation to public service organizations and enterprises, and eventually will obtain competitive advantages in the world.

The cooperation between School of Data Science Research, Tsinghua University and Cloudera will also aim at engaging international big data open source communities, to improve the activeness of participating current projects and make contributions to new open source projects. The vision is to drive wider adoption of big data in China, while bringing China homegrown technology back to international open source communities.

Meanwhile, Cloudera has also announced its BASE (Big Analytics Skills Enablement) initiative – an industry-led ecosystem that is designed to groom a future workforce of data professionals. Designed to strategically fill the skilled data professionals gap that the industry is currently facing, BASE pulls industry players and academic institutions together to equip more people with necessary skills in the areas of big data and analytics. The initiative also encompasses elements whereby trained data professionals will be matched to opportunities across sectors where their skills are required.
