Paxata Awards Student Fellowship Grants to Six Students

June 24 — Paxata, provider of the only enterprise-grade self-service data preparation platform, is pleased to announce it has awarded its Paxata Student Fellowships grants to six students who will attend the HILDA 2016 Workshop on Human-In-the-Loop Data Analytics, which is co-located with SIGMOD/PODS Conference. Each fellowship grant covers registration for the conferences, travel, accommodations and related expenses. Paxata is also a sponsor of the HILDA event, which is taking place at the San Francisco Hyatt Regency on June 26, 2016.

The fellowship awards were open to any enrolled university student; the application process involved submitting a one page statement describing the student’s current or planned research agenda, and why attending HILDA and SIGMOD/PODS would be beneficial to their field of study. The three HILDA co-chairs together with Paxata CTO Dave Brewster went through the submissions generated by students from Ohio State University, MIT, Columbia University, Berkeley, Georgia Institute of Technology, CWI Dutch Center for Mathematics and Computer Science and others. Six students were selected based on research submitted across a range of topics, from Declarative Visual Interaction Language, query processing techniques that make use of human perceptual models, a management system for machine learning models, large-scale distributed cube exploration using speculation and caching, and interactive visualization tools for interpreting machine learning.

“I am really honored that Paxata is able to support the HILDA efforts and give these six students a chance to showcase their work and exchange ideas with their peers from around the world,” said Dave Brewster, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer for Paxata. “One of our core values at Paxata is ‘passion’ and it is truly exciting to see a new generation of innovators and visionaries who are as passionate about developing modern information management solutions as we are.”

The annual ACM SIGMOD/PODS Conference is a leading international forum for database researchers, practitioners, developers, and users to explore cutting-edge ideas and results, and to exchange techniques, tools, and experiences. HILDA is a new workshop that will allow researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and results relating to how data management can be done with awareness of the people who form part of the processes. A sample of topics that is are in the spirit of this workshop includes, but is not limited to: novel query interfaces, interactive query refinement, data exploration and analysis, data visualization, human-assisted data integration and cleaning, perception-aware data processing, database systems designed for highly interactive use cases, empirical studies of database use, and crowd-powered data infrastructure.
