Hortonworks Receives $100M in Funding

PALO ALTO, Calif.March 25 — Hortonworks, the leading contributor to and provider of enterprise Apache Hadoop, today announced an oversubscribed $100 million funding round led by funds managed by BlackRock and Passport Capital, joined by all existing investors.

This financing will be used to extend Hortonworks’ strategy of delivering Apache Hadoop for the enterprise through leading innovation completely in the open, through the continued expansion of the ecosystem and through the expansion of global operations.

Since inception Hortonworks has been committed to leading the development of Hadoop to meet all the demands of enterprise IT completely in open source. It is through this dedicated approach that the spectrum of Hadoop projects was expanded last year to include YARN and now has expanded again to include additional core enterprise requirements – security, operations management and data governance – completely in open source and delivered as the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP).

Hortonworks has already seen tremendous uptake of HDP thanks to its versatility: from multiple data processing engines to the depth and breadth of integration across a variety of infrastructures and applications. Strategic resell partners that include Microsoft, SAP, Teradata, HP and others, combined with hundreds of technology partners, means enterprises can build on the Hadoop platform for a modern data architecture that integrates with the technologies that they already know and rely upon.  This funding will further accelerate the enablement of these strategic resell partners to sell HDP into their customer base as part of their offerings.

“Through our unrelenting focus on innovating completely in the open, and deeply integrating with existing data center systems, we have seen phenomenal growth in our business over the past 24 months,” said Rob Bearden, CEO of Hortonworks. “We will continue to deliver on the promise of a completely open platform and further cement Hortonworks as the unquestioned Hadoop leader in the IT ecosystem.”
