Meet 2023 Person to Watch Sam Altman

As the CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, Sam Altman is having an outsized impact on the direction of AI. The company’s launch of ChatGPT in November put made the public aware of the capabilities of large language models for the first time, and with this week’s launch of GPT-4, Altman and company look poised to take AI to the next level.

An interview is part of the process for our Person to Watch program, which is now in its eight year. However, Sam was too busy to take our call, so instead we asked ChatGPT to pretend to be him. Here is how ChatGPT answered our questions.

Datanami: Describe your goals for the company in the following year.

ChatGPT as Sam Altman: As CEO of OpenAI, my primary goal for the company in the coming year is to continue advancing cutting-edge artificial intelligence research while also finding practical applications for our technology that can have a positive impact on society. This includes exploring new areas such as reinforcement learning, unsupervised learning, and machine reasoning, as well as further improving the capabilities of our language models like GPT-3.

Datanami: What do you think are the most important trends in artificial intelligence?

ChatGPT as Sam Altman: In the field of artificial intelligence, I believe the most important trends include the continued development of language models like GPT-3, the increasing use of AI in various industries such as healthcare and finance, and the ethical considerations surrounding the deployment of AI systems. Additionally, I believe that the integration of AI with other emerging technologies like quantum computing will play a major role in shaping the future of the field.

Datanami: What were your goals in creating ChatGPT?

ChatGPT as Sam Altman: When creating ChatGPT, our goal was to develop a powerful language model that could generate human-like text responses to a wide variety of prompts. Our aim was to demonstrate the potential of advanced AI models to assist people in various tasks, such as answering questions, generating creative content, and helping to automate certain types of work. At the same time, we wanted to raise awareness about the ethical considerations surrounding the deployment of such models and encourage a responsible and balanced approach to their development and use.
