Zaloni Raises $7.5M in Series A Financing

DURHAM, N.C., March 4 — Zaloni, the data lake company, announced today that it has closed $7.5 million in Series A financing led by Sierra Ventures, with participation from Baird Capital. The company, which has been experiencing 100% year over year growth from its data lake management solutions, will use the proceeds to fund further expansion of the Zaloni software suite, sales and marketing, research and development, and international expansion. As part of the transaction, Mark Fernandes, Managing Director of Sierra Ventures, will join Zaloni’s Board of Directors.

“Sierra has a history of making investments in transformational technologies in the big data space, including Teradata and Greenplum. Data Lake solutions are what businesses are demanding, illustrated clearly by Zaloni’s tremendous growth over the past twelve months, and an impressive customer list of Fortune 500 customers,” said Fernandes. “We received very positive feedback and tremendous interest from the Sierra CXO Advisory Board, which validated the opportunity for Zaloni. One of the most significant challenges companies face is not a lack of data, but rather the ability to transform that data into meaningful business intelligence that is actionable. Zaloni clearly resolves this challenge.”

Zaloni is an award-winning provider of enterprise data Lake management solutions that enable businesses to be agile, to innovate, and to leverage big data for business impact. The company’s flagship software, Bedrock, offers the only fully integrated, data lake management platform for data visibility, governance and reliability. Introduced in late 2015, the company’s newest addition, Mica, provides the on-ramp for self-service data discovery, curation and preparation.  Underpinning the software is the founding team’s deep experience with Hadoop and big data management. Zaloni’s customers include major brands such as Verizon, UnitedHealth Group and more.

“Our mission is to empower businesses to transform, manage and utilize their data across the organization, transforming their data from simply being lots of data, to becoming their most valuable asset. Deriving actionable insights and true value from data means that organizations can better meet their customers’ specific needs, drive satisfaction, and increase revenue,” said Ben Sharma, CEO. “We are excited to leverage the expertise Sierra Ventures and Baird Capital have in the big data space and look forward to building on our success to date.”

“There is clear need for software platforms that simplify the management of data across the enterprise,” said James Pavlik, Partner at Baird Capital. “With Bedrock and Mica, Zaloni has paved the way to delivering on the promise of big data, turning it into knowledge and revenue. We look forward to partnering with the company to further drive their success.”

“451 Research has argued that enterprises should seriously consider the data governance and management requirements before embarking on data lake projects to ensure that the functionality is available to turn the concept into reality,” said Matt Aslett, Research Director, Data Platforms and Analytics, 451 Research. “There are two key drivers for data lakes: data governance and self-service data preparation. Zaloni is addressing both, differentiating it from niche data preparation and data governance competitors alike.”

“ESG research shows analytics to be one of the two most important IT priorities in 2016. Yet as many IT organizations rush to build a data lake, they quickly realize that they still need to satisfy the strict demands of the business,” said Nik Rouda, Senior Analyst at ESG for Big Data, Analytics, and Data Management. “Zaloni has focused on creating the foundation for successful big data initiatives, and this new funding should accelerate adoption in the enterprise.”
