Univa Completes Acquisition of Grid Engine Assets

MARKHAM, Ontario, Oct. 22 — Univa, the Data Center Automation company, today announced that the company will assume support of Oracle Grid Engine customers. As a part of the transaction, Univa acquired Oracle Grid Engine assets and intellectual property making it the sole commercial provider of Grid Engine software. Univa has been a leading distributor of Grid Engine software since 2011 under the Univa brand. Univa employs many of the core contributors of the original open-source Grid Engine project that have been working with Grid Engine internals and queuing theory for years.

Grid Engine software is a widely deployed distributed resource management system that orchestrates the distribution of workloads to available compute resources. Providing users with flexibility and accuracy, Grid Engine software monitors the real-time status of all resources in the cluster and can assign jobs to those resources that are best suited to manage workloads. With the guidance of Univa, Grid Engine software has been deployed in enterprise technical computing clusters for non-technical enterprise applications and more recently with Big Data applications including Hadoop.

“Grid Engine software celebrated its 20th anniversary this year,” said Gary Tyreman, Univa President and CEO. “This is a very exciting time for Univa as we welcome more Grid Engine software users to the Univa community that span the globe and virtually every industry. This transaction establishes Univa as a steward of Grid Engine software and complements a banner year of growth and expansion for Univa outside of enterprise technical computing. We are excited to continue to develop Univa Grid Engine software to meet the needs of tomorrow for the HPC and Big Data communities.”

Beginning immediately, existing Oracle Grid Engine customers with active support contracts will continue to receive support and maintenance pursuant to the terms of their existing contracts from Univa’s experienced team. Univa will also offer such customers special upgrade options and provide a smooth transition to Univa Grid Engine. Oracle Grid Engine customers will receive an immediate benefit from Univa’s expertise and support of Grid Engine. Those Oracle customers who elect to upgrade will have access to the company’s robust and stable system, additional features and can leverage Univa’s suite of integrated products. Univa Grid Engine has been deployed in hundreds of the world’s largest and most demanding commercial high performance environments supporting mission-critical computations, analyses and Big Data applications.
