Scalyr Announces Event Data Cloud Solution

SAN MATEO, Calif., July 29, 2020 — Scalyr announced Event Data Cloud, a solution built and optimized to be the event analytics engine embedded into other cloud services and custom applications. Event data is the digital lifeblood that provides the most granular and accurate view of a digital system or service, and it explodes as companies migrate from monolithic to modern stacks. Analyzing this data, affordably, has become a significant challenge for many organizations who use the data to power their SaaS services.

With the introduction of the event data cloud, Scalyr provides two ways to tap the power of its event data analytics service: through Scalyr’s own user interface, designed for log analytics and incident management, or by leveraging Scalyr’s APIs to power other UIs and services that need to access and analyze event data at scale.  Both solutions are powered by Scalyr’s cloud native, no-index architecture, that thrives on messy data and chaos at scale.

“We are proud that companies can now use APIs to harness the full power of Scalyr’s fast and elegant architecture as an analytics engine to power their services,” said Christine Heckart, CEO of Scalyr. “Scalyr’s event data cloud can provide a significant boost to the margin profile of other analytics services by reducing COGs, open up new use cases for custom applications, and deliver a boost in performance so users can work at the speed of thought.”

“The event data cloud represents an important and missing category in the technology landscape,” said Jason Pressmen of Shasta Ventures. “The cloud data warehouse isn’t optimized for real time use cases by engineering teams, and most log and search products aren’t designed for event data at scale. The Event Data Cloud fills this void and will catalyze new use cases and new users of event data. Scalyr is the first in this space, but I doubt it will be the last.”

Customers helped to shape the offering and are excited because it solves problems created by fragmented data pools and multiple, conflicting sources of ‘truth.’  As a result, they can drive workflow automation, reduce duplicative cost, and unleash the power of event data within their organizations for new insights and use cases.

“I’ve been a customer of Scalyr’s at two different companies and helped to shape the vision of the Event Data Cloud,” said Eric Bowman, SVP of Engineering at TomTom, the leading independent location specialist for mobility, navigation and real-time traffic information. “Event data is critical to all cloud services and a single source of truth is needed to power a variety of use cases across our organization.”

“The event data cloud is well-timed to meet the needs of the modern organization looking for a single source of truth to power a wide range of analytics use cases,” said Tahir Hashmi, VP of Engineering & Technical Fellow at Tokopedia, Indonesia’s largest ecommerce player. “Tokopedia is excited to explore the full potential of the event data cloud to power the operational analytics and search within our multi-cloud infrastructure that supports 90 million monthly active users and 8.6 million merchants across Indonesia.”

Operating in excess of 200TB/day per customer at $0.16 per GB ingested, Scalyr’s event data cloud is faster and more scalable than other analytics solutions and cheaper to operate than “free” open source.  Made possible by Scalyr’s Sonic Boom announcement in April, the event data cloud now powers both first and third party cloud services and applications. Used under the hood of other analytics services, often to replace Elasticsearch, the event data cloud can typically lower COGs by 10x and improve analytics performance by even more.

“Event data is voluminous, messy, and vital to applications ranging from real time monitoring to deep trend analysis. Meeting these requirements at scale using traditional architectures has been so difficult that many teams have been forced to jettison vital data,” said Steve Newman, Scalyr’s founder. “Our unique architecture broke that scale / cost / performance barrier in observability, and now with the Event Data Cloud, the same architecture can power a wide variety of services beyond Scalyr’s own.”

Elegant in its powerful simplicity, key attributes of Scalyr’s event data cloud architecture include:

  • Columnar Store: Data is parsed in real time into a sleek columnar store with no need to create, store or update indexes because there are no indexes.
  • Separate Storage and Compute: Storage and compute scale independently and horizontally to handle spikey data and query patterns.
  • Summary Service: Stream processing automatically summarizes event streams to optimize repetitive queries, instantly update rich dashboards, and support thousands of complex alerting rules. , while completely offloading automated and repetitive queries from the main query engine.
  • Horizontal Scheduling: Queries are simultaneously distributed across every CPU in the global cluster, and 96% are cleared in <1 second, even at scale. It works like Google search.
  • Network Effect: Scale is a benefactor that drives speed and value, not a problem that degrades performance. The more data Scalyr ingests the faster and more affordable the system is for all customers.

Horizontal scheduling is a unique attribute of this architecture and, when coupled with massive multi-tenancy, parallelization, and tuned heuristics, provide an order of magnitude reduction in cost with many orders of magnitude improvement in performance. The driving philosophy behind the system’s architecture is to eliminate constraints of price and performance at scale.

“We are excited to offer companies two ways to buy our analytics solutions,” said Casey Clark, Scalyr’s Chief Customer Officer. “We want to thank all the companies that provided guidance to our leadership and technical teams as we developed and built the industry’s first Event Data Cloud. It’s a proud moment shared by many.”
