RENCI Teams with Georgia Tech on Big Data Hub Proposal

July 1 — The National Science Foundation (NSF) is looking to launch innovative public-private partnerships on big data through a new initiative called Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs (BD Hubs). This past spring, the NSF held charrette meetings in each region of the country to discuss the BD Hubs initiative and solicit ideas for regional BD Hubs. After the South region charrette, UNC-Chapel Hill/RENCI and the Georgia Institute of Technology were tapped to develop a proposal for the South Big Data Regional Innovation Hub (South BD Hub) on behalf of the 16 states and the District of Columbia in the south region.

That proposal was submitted last week, and awards are expected to be announced in October. If funded, the UNC/Georgia Tech South BD Hub will foster data science innovation across the region and will connect with three other regional BD Hubs to help create and sustain a national big data innovation ecosystem.

For more information, see the NSF BD Hubs project synopsis.
