MOSAiC Data Now Available in ARM Data Center

Nov. 20, 2019 — The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility made available its first data from the Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) field campaign.

ARM instruments are installed on the German icebreaker R/V Polarstern, MOSAiC’s central observatory, which began its yearlong drift in arctic ice in early October 2019.

Giri Prakash, ARM Data Services Manager from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, says Misha Krassovski, an information technology engineer from Oak Ridge, delivered the first batch of data drives October 30. Krassovski was on the Leg 1a installation team for MOSAiC.

Due to the limited bandwidth available in the central Arctic, data from MOSAiC must be shipped via disk. New data are expected to arrive at the ARM Data Center approximately every two months, when the R/V Polarstern receives resupply and crew changes for each leg of the campaign. However, quicklooks from many instruments will be available earlier at https://tinyurl.com/arm-mosaicplots.

“We offloaded the data, ran the ingest, and made it available for data review within 24 hours of receiving the data,” says Prakash.

So far, data are available from the ceilometer, micropulse lidar, balloon-borne sounding system, and Aerosol Observing System instruments, as well as navigational location and attitude.

More datastreams will be archived and made available in the ARM Data Center when the data review is complete.

To access the MOSAiC data, log in to the ARM Data Center. (Go here to create an account to download the data).
