Forrester Research Names Hortonworks Leader in Big Data Hadoop Solutions

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 27 — Hortonworks, the leading contributor to and provider of enterprise Apache Hadoop, today announced that Forrester Research Inc. found the company among the leaders in the February 2014 report, “The Forrester Wave: Big Data Hadoop Solutions, Q1 2014.” As reported by Forrester, “Hortonworks loves and lives open source innovation. Hortonworks’ strategy is to drive all innovation through the open source community and create an ecosystem of partners that accelerate Hadoop adoption among enterprises.” Hortonworks was cited for starting new projects, such as Ambari, and committing its resources to get these projects off the ground. It was also noted for landing key strategic partnerships with companies such as Teradata, Microsoft and SAP, among others.

The Forrester Wave: Big Data Hadoop Solutions Q1 2014 evaluated nine Hadoop solutions based on 32 weighted criteria, including current offering, strategy and market presence. Each vendor evaluated offers a cross-domain Hadoop solution, provided at least two customer references, and has sparked client inquiries or has a solution that has put the vendor on Forrester’s radar.

“We are honored to be recognized as a leader in Big Data Hadoop Solutions,” said Rob Bearden, CEO of Hortonworks. “Hadoop is becoming the cornerstone of the modern data architecture, and we remain committed to working with and contributing back to the community to ensure that the new Hadoop core reaches its full potential as the next-generation data platform.”

Hortonworks recently announced the general availability of the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) 2.0, the first commercial Hadoop distribution built on the first GA version of Hadoop 2 from the Apache Software Foundation. A culmination of five years of work across the Hadoop community, HDP 2.0 delivers the YARN-based architecture of Hadoop 2, phase 2 of the Stinger Initiative and includes the very latest innovations from the broader Hadoop ecosystem in a single integrated and tested platform appropriate for mainstream enterprise use. Apache Hadoop YARN serves as the Hadoop operating system and takes Hadoop beyond simply a single-use data platform for batch processing to a multi-use platform that enables batch, interactive, online and stream processing. By acting as the primary resource manager and mediator of access to data stored in HDFS, YARN enables enterprises to store data in a single place and interact with it in multiple ways simultaneously and with consistent levels of service.
