Data Portal Reaches Milestone, Stores Data from Big Wind Projects

June 7, 2021 — Since 2015, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has managed the Data Archive and Portal (DAP) under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmosphere to Electrons initiative. The DAP stores massive amounts of wind energy data that are accessible to wind plant owners, researchers, and others. The data support decisions on types of technologies to deploy and where to locate those technologies.

The DAP reached a major milestone in January 2021—1,000 registered users who have contributed more than 240 terabytes of wind energy research data from 20 registered projects.

The DAP has provided near-real-time data visualization and download capabilities to projects, such as the recent deployment of two offshore wind research buoys off the coast of California and the second Wind Forecast Improvement Project that took place in the Columbia Basin of eastern Washington and Oregon.

Now, the DAP is providing capabilities, such as automatic data standardization and visualization, for new wind energy projects that are producing large amounts of data. Example projects include the third Wind Forecast Improvement Project and the American Wake Experiment (AWAKEN). This will allow the AWAKEN research team to monitor data flow and instruments in near real time—providing assurance that the instruments are functioning properly and collecting the most useful data.

PNNL’s management of the DAP is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Energy Technologies Office.
