The Future of Storage: Hardware

Jul 26, 2018 |

Fueled by massive growth in data creation, the state of data storage hardware is evolving at a considerable rate at the moment. Much of the innovation occurring today is tied to solid state flash drives and non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies, running both on-premise and in the cloud. Read more…

IBM Storage Breakthrough Paves Way for 330TB Tape Cartridges

Aug 7, 2017 |

IBM announced last week a new record for magnetic tape storage that it says will keep tape storage density on a Moore’s law-like path far into the next decade. In collaboration with Sony, IBM scientists recorded 201 gigabits on one square inch of prototype magnetic tape, achieving a 20x improvement over the areal density used in current state of the art enterprise tape drives. Is Spinning Disk Going Extinct? Experts Weigh In

Oct 25, 2016 |

There’s no doubt about it: Spinning disk is getting squeezed. As fast solid state drives (SSDs) get cheaper and tape drives get bigger, the sweet spot where spinning hard disk drives (HDDs) make sense gets smaller every year. Read more…

Tape Gets Second Wind as Big Data Mounts

Sep 16, 2014 |

Think tape is dead in our big data world? Think again. This week, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) announced that it bought 20PB of tape capacity to expand the world’s biggest data archive. Read more…

The Application Angle to Unstructured Data

Apr 30, 2012 |This week, Tom Leyden from Amplidata broke the interview-as-marketing vehicle mold when he thoughtfully addressed what big data needs he’s hearing about, the shifting nature of applications, and the role of cloud models... Read more…

Solving Big Data Storage at CERN

Nov 22, 2011 |As a research facility that seeks to understand the universe itself, CERN is churning away at problems at generate over 25 petabytes of information each year. This week a tape story found its way out of the center via an announcement from SpectraLogic. Read more…

Tape, It’s Not Just for Backup Anymore

Nov 2, 2011 |A number of storage vendors with tape offerings have been pitching their wares as ripe for the era of big data, but until recently, few have sauntered into exascale territory with their product lines. This week SpectraLogic made key announcements that are meant to expand the horizons of tape for truly big data needs. Read more…
