A Sneak Peek Into Wrangle Summit 2021 and the Future of Data Engineering

Matt Derda

Wrangle Summit 2021, co-hosted by Trifacta and Google Cloud, is coming to a screen near you on April 7‒9, and I’d love to see you there.

Before you start groaning, “Not another Zoom call,” hear me out.

This event will be unlike any other you’ve attended. Yes, it will be virtual. But it’ll be virtually packed with speakers, ideas, innovations, and opportunities that you won’t find anywhere else.

This is the first-ever conference to focus exclusively on data engineering. Even if “data engineer” is not in your official job title, if you move, structure, clean, or pipeline data to drive critical enterprise decisions, you’re doing the work of data engineering.

The whole point of Wrangle Summit 2021 is to learn, share, and grow the discipline of data engineering and network with some of the world’s leading minds who are shaping its future. Here are three sneak peeks into who some of those minds are and what they’ll be sharing.

Peek #1: The Role of Data Engineering in Analytics Modernization

Nearly every company—from large-scale Fortune 500s to fast-growing upstarts—is modernizing its approach to analytics to stay ahead of the competition. Nearly every analytics modernization effort shares these two goals:

  1. Incorporate more data into analytics processes regardless of that data’s origin, shape, or size
  2. Turn that data into value faster by increasing their data velocity (love that image!)

Trifacta CEO Adam Wilson and Google Cloud Vice President and General Manager Debanjan Saha get together to discuss how analytics in the cloud has evolved over the past few years and the reasons why data engineering has emerged as the critical component for organizational success.

Peek #2: Why Data is the Ultimate Weapon in Fighting Infectious Diseases

Issues related to data collection and analysis have made protecting public health and safety during the COVID-19 global pandemic enormously challenging. Three experts from Genomics England, Infectious Diseases Data Observatory at the University of Oxford, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explain how they are weaponizing complex and massive amounts of data to fight infectious diseases like COVID-19.

Peek #3: Lakehouse: A New Generation of Open Platforms for Data Warehousing and AI

Enterprise data architectures usually contain many systems—data lakes, message queues, and data warehouses—that data must pass through before it can be analyzed. Each transfer step between systems adds a delay and a potential source of errors, reducing the quality and freshness of data downstream. What if most of these steps could be eliminated?

Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University and Chief Technologist at Databricks Matei Zaharia introduces a radically new architecture: the lakehouse, an ACID transactional layer over cloud storage that can provide streaming, data versioning, and high-performance SQL access similar to a data warehouse, as well as direct access from non-SQL workloads such as AI applications.

These are just some of the groundbreaking sessions featured at Wrangle Summit 2021. Check out the full agenda to see more, including speakers from heavyweights like Bank of America, the U.S. Air Force, and Eli Lilly. And then register to reserve your seat. I look forward to seeing you there.
