Artificial intelligence technologies like DALL-E and ChatGPT made numerous headlines in 2022. That trend is expected to continue the first week of 2023 at the Consumer Electronics Show, which officially kicks off with a keynote by AMD’s CEO Wednesday night in Las Vegas.

The CES is one of the biggest tech events of the year, with more than 100,000 attendees crowding into Sin City’s many hotel rooms. The show serves as a springboard for technology announcements from thousands of vendors, big and small, and a glimpse of capabilities to come down the road.

Advances in autonomous vehicles are sure to grab headlines during the show. Nvidia, Qualcomm, and other tech giants will be at CES to flout their latest wares, while heavy equipment manufacturer John Deere will showcase the latest in self-driving tractors (you can see our 2022 write-up here).

CES is expected to draw a mind-numbing 3,000 vendors, about half of which will be startups. Most of the companies will be hawking the latest consumer enhancements in big screen TVs, PCs, headphones, stereos, 3D printers, AR and VR headsets, household appliances, beauty producdts, and, of course, drones (lots and lots of drones).

The only category of consumer product not expected to be heavily represented is mobile phones; Apple reportedly isn’t even at the show.

Considering the AI-powered advances in NLP and computer vision over the past year, deep generative neural network models like ChatGPT and DALL-E are expected to play prominently in this year’s show.

The capability to converse in a somewhat natural manner with an autonomous agent has multiple applications, from customer support and code debugging to law and even journalism. There are so many potential ways to use large language models, such as ChatGPT, and it will be interesting to see what new consumer-oriented AI applications vendors debut at CES.

The show officially kicks off following an opening keynote by Lisa Su, AMD’s chair and CEO. Su is expected to talk about the latest advances in high-performance and adaptive computing, including the push to exascale supercomputers. You can watch Su’s keynote Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. PT at this link.
