MonetDB Solutions – a spinoff from the developers of column-oriented relational database system MonetDB, founded in 2013 – has secured an investment of an undisclosed amount from enterprise digital workflow management firm ServiceNow. MonetDB Solutions says it will use the undisclosed sum to drive digital transformation in large enterprises and fund further development of its enterprise solutions.

“In today’s world of digital business, large enterprises require application responsiveness and speed at scale, and that requires a different approach to database technology,” said Martin Kersten, CEO and co-founder of MonetDB Solutions. “Together with ServiceNow, we will continue to expand our Database-as-a-Service environment, as MonetDB also plans to invest in further product innovation.”

“With the first ServiceNow investment, we have successfully advanced our open-source database system MonetDB from a pure analytical database engine to a hybrid transactional and analytical processing engine,” added Ying Zhang, COO and co-founder of MonetDB Solutions. “Our next step is to enrich the cloud [data warehouse] solutions with an analytics platform based on this powerful engine. By providing each user with a carefully balanced solution, we can minimize the resource waste, hence reducing users’ costs.”

The funding came alongside news of a partnership between MonetDB Solutions and ServiceNow, which will see the two companies collaborate to build MonetDB’s open-source database technology into ServiceNow’s Now Platform. The Now Platform includes a range of workflow tools, including performance analytics, a mobile app builder, AI-powered search, predictive analytics, process optimization, and edge encryption.

“We partner with some of the largest organizations in the world to deliver digital workflows that create great experiences and unlock productivity,” said Pat Casey, CTO and senior vice president of DevOps at ServiceNow. “Our priority is to make the Now Platform the most innovative for our customers to get work done. We invested in MonetDB to share our expertise in cloud automation and drive greater benefits for some of the world’s largest companies.”

“Together with MonetDB, ServiceNow helps customers unlock productivity and deliver great experiences on the Now Platform,” added Joe Davis, senior vice president of platform engineering at ServiceNow. “This deepened investment reinforces ServiceNow’s commitment to leverage the most innovative database technologies for our customers.”

MonetDB Solutions says that this partnership will strengthen the analytics capabilities of the Now Platform and drive faster transaction speeds for ServiceNow’s larger customers.

MonetDB has been built across more than 25 years of open-source development. In MonetDB Solutions’ most recent update on the platform, they highlighted “major renovations of the MonetDB internals to improve speed, functionality and stability to strengthen its role in the enterprise market.”
