Big Data Career Notes: April 2021 Edition

In this monthly feature, we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest career developments for individuals in the big data community. Whether it’s a promotion, new company hire, or even an accolade, we’ve got the details. Check in each month for an updated list and you may even come across someone you know, or better yet, yourself!


Pascal Bornet

Aera Technology, a cognitive automation company, appointed Pascal Bornet as its chief data officer. Bornet brings over 20 years of experience, including founding the artificial intelligence and automation practices for McKinsey & Company and EY, where he drove the transformation of global enterprises across industries.

“I am excited to join the Aera Technology team,” said Bornet. “I believe in the combination of AI and Automation technologies to automate the most complex business use cases. This crossroad of domains perfectly describes Aera’s unique position in the market. It is about leveraging data, machine learning and process automation to generate the highest value for companies.”

Tim Cabral

SingleStore, the database of now for cloud-native modern applications, welcomed former chief financial officer Tim Cabral to its board of directors. At Veeva Systems, Cabral played a key role in the company’s expansion efforts. Cabral currently serves as the audit committee chair for Doximity and ServiceTitan.

“SingleStore has delivered amazing results in the past year amid an extremely challenging environment,” said Cabral. “I look forward to being involved with this database innovator and bringing the operational experience I have gained at both private and large public companies to SingleStore as the company positions for greater scale and success.”

Grant Crow, Tacis Gavoyannis, Brian Boyer, and Henk Jansen

Massive Analytic, a precognition AI company, welcomed Dr. Grant Crow, Tacis Gavoyannis, Brian Boyer, and Henk Jansen to its leadership team.  Crow joined as Massive Analytics’ chief operating officer. She comes from HUMN.ai, where she held the role of chief operating officer.

Gavoyannis joined as its chief growth officer, where he will focus on the expansion of Massive Analytics’ customer base. Boyer joined as the company’s senior vice president of commercial operations, bringing over 25 years of experience. Lastly, Jansen joined Massive Analytics as its director of research and innovation, with a mission to develop new leading-edge technologies in autonomous control and quantum computing.

Peter Jack

Peter Jack joined Exasol, the high-performance analytics database vendor, as its chief data and analytics officer. Jack has held several leadership positions supporting companies through digital transformation. He will help Exasol customers make the most of its high-performance in-memory analytics database to accelerate their journey.

“I’m delighted to have joined Exasol. I’ve known the company for several years and its trajectory has been very impressive. I’m looking forward to helping Exasol get to the next level in its growth journey,” said Peter. “The opportunity in the data analytics market is enormous, and I am excited about supporting Exasol’s mission to accelerate insights from the world’s data.”

Shane James

MANTA, a data lineage platform provider, appointed Shane James as its senior vice president of customer success. James comes from Tanium, where he served as its director of customer success. Before Tanium, he spent over 16 years at Oracle, where he served as its director of North America, pre and post-sales engineering, and customer success.

“Similar to MANTA’s focus on enabling businesses to take advantage of their data, my goal is to ensure that our customers are getting the most out of their investments in our technology,” James said. “My focus will be on ensuring MANTA is a true business partner for our customers, which means understanding their unique business goals and figuring out how we can best support them as they work to achieve these goals.”

Paul Lewis

Pythian Services Inc., a data, analytics and cloud services company, appointed Paul Lewis as its chief technology officer. As CTO, Lewis will drive Pythian’s technology strategy, helping customers leverage and scale their data and cloud assets to deliver valuable business outcomes throughout their digital transformation journey.

“I’m thrilled to join Pythian’s esteemed leadership team,” said Lewis. “I look forward to championing the company’s relentless focus on data and the cloud to inform and elevate organizations across the globe.”

Todd Levy

Netlist, Inc., a high-performance SSD and modular memory subsystems vendor, appointed Todd Levy as its vice president of sales. Levy brings over 25 years of experience working in the memory and storage market.

Before Levy joined Netlist, he held several positions at SMART Modular Technologies, including senior director of worldwide sales and senior director of strategic accounts. Levy previously worked at Netlist in the early 2000s as a global account manager for Dell.

Robin Matlock and Anita Pandey

Dremio, a data lake service provider, welcomed Robin Matlock to its board of directors and Anita Pandey as its chief marketing officer. Matlock brings over 30 years of experience in marketing, sales and business development in the enterprise software and services market. In addition to Dremio, she is an independent director on the boards of Iron Mountain, Cohesity, and People.ai.

Pandey brings more than 20 years of technology leadership experience to Dremio, most recently as CMO of Cisco’s cloud security business unit, where she led marketing, inside sales and go-to-market strategy. She also served as vice president of marketing and cloud migration at Velostrata (acquired by Google in 2018).

Jeff Moyer

Jeff Moyer joined Luminoso, the company that turns unstructured text data into business-critical insights, as its president and chief executive officer. Before Moyer joined Luminoso, he held the role of senior vice president of private cloud and managed public cloud for Rackspace, a multi-cloud technology services company.

“Businesses are leaving money on the table if they don’t have a fast, accurate way of extracting sentiment and insights from the text data they receive through reviews, surveys, chatbot conversations, call center transcripts and many other sources,” said Moyer. “The Luminoso team has done an extraordinary job of both building text analytics solutions that are truly differentiated in the market, and helping some of the world’s most well-known brands use its applications to turn insights into revenue. As Luminoso enters its second decade, I look forward to leading the company through a period of exponential expansion.”

Steve Neat

Alation Inc., an enterprise data intelligence solutions provider, welcomed former executive at Collibra, Steve Neat, as its new vice president of sales for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Neat will be responsible for addressing and the region’s demand and develop new sales channels.

“Alation is well-positioned within the enterprise data intelligence market, as organizations of all sizes race to create a data culture and become more data-driven,” said Neat. “I’m excited to join Alation at this pivotal stage of growth, further expand our sales coverage beyond the U.S., and build out a local team to better serve our customers and help them succeed on their data intelligence journeys.”

Kate Reed

Kate Reed joined Syniti, an enterprise data management soultion provider, as its chief marketing officer. Former CME of IBM Security Reed brings over 15 years of experience building and growing customer acquisition programs. She will oversee Syniti’s worldwide marketing strategy and execution.

“What drew me to Syniti was its customer-first mentality and software-led services approach that’s unmatched in the Enterprise Data Management space,” said Reed. “Syniti’s complex data expertise gives enterprises unique tools to gain competitive advantage and grow faster, and I’m pleased to be a part of this exciting next chapter with our team, partners and customers.”

Jonathan Reid

Yellowbrick Data welcomed Jonathan Reid as its chief revenue officer. Reid brings more than 25 years of experience in driving growth strategies for start-up companies. AS CRO, He will be responsible for accelerating the adoption of Yellowbrick Data Warehouse within enterprises and commercial companies and building strong partnerships.

“The growth potential for Yellowbrick is absolutely staggering,” said Reid. “Companies are demanding real-time analytics as part of a digital transformation that’s been accelerated by the pandemic and the associated unprecedented growth in cloud and virtual business. Yellowbrick is uniquely poised to help companies transform through extraordinarily fast insights, with a price performance level unheard of in the industry.”

Paul Repice

Datadobi, an unstructured data management software vendor, appointed Paul Repice as its vice president of sales for the Americas.  Repice will be responsible for creating and maintaining the company’s sales strategies. He comes from Tintri, where he served as the vice president of sales for the Americas.

“Organizations have been struggling to manage the growth of their unstructured data, both on-premises and in the cloud, and to use it to their advantage,” said Repice. “Datadobi’s stellar reputation attracted me to the company, and it is my privilege to join the team. I look forward to working with the Datadobi team to be able to extend the reach of our best-in-class solutions to enterprises around the world so that teams can do more with their petabytes of data and billions of files.”

Ajay Sabhlok

Rubrik, a cloud data management company, appointed Ajay Sabhlok as its chief information officer and chief data officer. Sabhlok brings more than 10 years of experience in the technology industry and will oversee the IT, data and advanced analytics strategies for Rubrik. Sabhlok, who joined the company in 2018, was promoted from his role as vice president and head of IT enterprise business applications.

“Today, more than at any time in history, leading businesses are hungry to create meaningful business value from their data,” said Sabhlok. “This new role presents the perfect opportunity for Rubrik to continue to deliver on its promise to enable enterprises to maximize value from their data in increasingly complex and fragmented environments across data centers and clouds. I’m thrilled to lead our IT and analytics strategies for Rubrik and unlock new insights and possibilities for our valued customers.”

Cory Scott and Melanie Vinson

Confluent, Inc., provider of the platform to set data in motion, appointed Cory Scott and Melanie Vinson as its chief information security officer and chief legal officer, respectively. Scott comes from Google, where he served as head of security and product privacy for the company’s devices and services division. Before Google, Cory was CISO at LinkedIn, where he advocated the use of Apache Kafka for security telemetry in monitoring and incident response.

Vinson comes from Adaptive Insights, a financial planning cloud company, where she served as general counsel and board secretary. She was responsible for building the legal team to support corporate governance, scalability, and privacy and compliance initiatives.
