Databricks Now on Google Cloud

Databricks customers can now run their big data applications on Google Cloud, the companies announced today. The move gives Databricks’ customers another public cloud option besides Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.

Databricks, which was founded by the creators of Apache Spark, has emerged as one of hottest big data runtimes in the cloud, with a valuation estimated at $28 billion following a $1 billion-Series G round of funding earlier this month.

The San Francisco-based company’s big data offerings, including Spark, Delta Lake, Delta Engine, and MLflow, have been available for some time on the Azure and AWS clouds. And now is finally running on Google Cloud, which is the smallest of the three.

“This is a pivotal milestone that underscores our commitment to enable customer flexibility and choice with a seamless experience across cloud platforms,” Databricks co-founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi stated in a press release. “We are thrilled to partner with Google Cloud and deliver on our shared vision of a simplified, open, and unified data platform that supports all analytics and AI use-cases that will empower our customers to innovate even faster.”

Databricks says its offerings will run atop the Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), giving customers flexibility in managing containerized workloads. The Databricks offerings will also integrate with Google BigQuery analytics services, as well as Google Cloud Storage, Looker, and Pub/Sub.

Databricks says its Delta Lake lakehouse, which leverages provides a “good, better, best” approach to data integration and quality management, will be integrated with BigQuery, giving customers choice in how their SQL queries are executed. The Databricks on Google Cloud offering will also work with Google’s AI Platform, the companies say.

Thomas Kurian, the CEO of Google Cloud, says the new pairing will help joint customers accelerate their data and analytics investments. “By combining Databricks’ capabilities in data engineering and analytics with Google Cloud’s global, secure network—and our expertise in analytics and delivering containerized applications—we can help companies transform their businesses through the power of data,” he stated in a press release.

The new Databricks-on-Google offering will also provide a place for respective business partners to augment customer’s data solutions. Third-parties mentioned in the announcement include: Accenture, Cognizant, Collibra, Confluent, Deloitte, Fishtown Analytics, Fivetran, Immuta, Informatica, Infoworks, Insight, MongoDB, Privacera, Qlik, SADA, SoftServe, Slalom, Tableau, TCS, and Trifacta.
