Big Data Career Notes: June 2020 Edition

In this monthly feature, we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest career developments for individuals in the big data community. Whether it’s a promotion, new company hire, or even an accolade, we’ve got the details. Check in each month for an updated list and you may even come across someone you know, or better yet, yourself!


Bill Cook

Bill Cook joins Yugabyte as chief executive officer. Under this new role, Cook is responsible for driving the continued market adoption and expansion of the Yugabyte Platform and Yugabyte Cloud. He comes from Pivotal, bringing over 35 years of expertise in enterprise software and data infrastructure.

“YugabyteDB is the only open source, enterprise-grade relational database that alleviates the pain organizations face as they embrace a cloud-native architecture in a multi-cloud world. Yugabyte is better positioned than any other company in this fast-growing market to become the de-facto cloud-native database provider and replace traditional RDBMS players like Oracle,” Cook said. “Yugabyte’s co-founders have created an incredible foundation with strong company culture and attracted some of the best talent in the industry. I’m honored to be part of this team.”

Matt Gallatin

Matt Gallatin joins Reltio as its chief financial officer. Gallatin has a 30-year career in financial management with company’s such as Drawbridge, OneLogin, and Yahoo! As CFO, Gallatin will be responsible for the company’s financial portfolio and strategies.

“I have seen first-hand the value of data-driven investments and how the C-suite is increasingly focusing on these efforts. Reltio provides a responsive data management platform that is required in today’s business climate,” Gallatin said. “Reltio partners with Global 2000 data innovators to catalyze digital transformation to better engage with their customers and create competitive advantage. I’m eager to help further the success of Reltio and our customers.”

Tim Hermes

Tim Hermes was promoted to Associate Publisher for the Datanami publication at Tabor Communications. He was promoted from Director of Integrated Accounts and is a veteran B2B publishing executive who has been in the digital media space for over 20 years.

Hermes started in online media in the 90s and rose to vice president and publisher at Access Intelligence LLC. In 2004, he started Hermes Media & Research. He launched and sold three B2B publications over the next seven years. For years he’s been a regular contributor and speaker at major publishing events. After retiring in late 2018, he decided that he wasn’t ready for a life of leisure and joined the Datanami part-time in May 2019.

Natalie Hogan

DataRobot promoted Natalie Hogan to chief administrative officer from her previous role of chief of staff to DataRobot CEO Jeremy Achin. Hogan will continue to work with leadership to drive top priorities and address key issues in the company. She will also work with DataRobot’s CEO Dan Right to manage the company’s administrative processes and procedures.

Ashley Kramer, Shelly Landsmann, and Sarah Ward

Sisense appointed Ashley Kramer to the newly created role of chief product and marketing officer. The company also tapped Shelly Landsmann and Sarah Ward for the roles of vice president of international sales and global alliances and general counsel, respectively.

Kramer will be responsible for the company’s product and marketing operations. Kramer has served key roles at Alteryx, Tableau Software, at Amazon, Oracle, and NASA. Landsmann, who prior to Sinsene served as Microsoft Israel’s CEO, will oversee the nurturing and creation of global customer channels. Lastly, Ward comes from MongoDB, where she served under the role of assistant general counsel. She will lead Sisense’s worldwide legal team and strategy.

Andrew Moloney

Andrew Moloney joins SoftIron Ltd. as vice president of strategy. He will be responsible for the company’s go-to-market planning and execution for SoftIron’s product portfolio and global presence. Before SoftIron, Moloney was the founder of his own firm over the past nine years. He was responsible for guiding and creating strategies for various technology businesses.

“Many organizations are at an inflection point in their architecture, as they consider the implications of hybrid cloud and edge computing in their future strategy,” Moloney said. “What SoftIron is doing is truly unique – taking leading open source software and building task-specific hardware platforms that redefine what’s possible in both performance and efficiency in deploying them. In the process, SoftIron is simplifying the ability for organizations to adopt open source based ‘software defined’ architectures at scale. This will not only challenge traditional datacenter design, but will also change what’s possible at the edge. I am looking forward to helping drive the mission here.”

Paul Staelin, Katie Murphy, Ash Vijay, and Andrew Kane

Trifacta appointed Paul Staelin, Katie Murphy, Ash Vijay, and Andrew Kane to leadership positions within the company. As chief customer officer, Staelin will manage the company’s global customer experience program. Murphy joined Trifacta as vice president of HR, bringing with her an 18-year career in human resources, including working at Reltio, Ralph Lauren, and Williams-Sonoma.

Vijay was tapped for the role of vice president of Cloud Ecosystems and Kane as vice president of Customer Success. Vijay has a 17-year career working at companies like Microsoft, Deloitte, Citrix. Before Trifacta, he held the role of managing director of Cloud Strategy, Channel, and Marketplace Ecosystems at Cloudera. Kane comes from Birst, where he spent ten years helping customers achieve customer success.

Cliff Wang

At the IEEE Big Data Security Conference,  Dr. Cliff Wang, Computing Sciences Division chief for the Army Research Office, was presented the 2020 IEEE Big Data Security Pioneer Award. Wang’s leadership and vision in starting critical research in big data analytics and security were commended by IEEE. Wang has overseen the Army Research Office’s (a unit of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory) extramural research portfolio on information assurance since 2003. He was promoted to chief of the Computing Sciences Division in 2007 and continues to manage his cybersecurity programs.

The IEEE Big Data Security Pioneer Award recognizes individuals who have conducted groundbreaking research and founded technologies in big data security and privacy. Wang received his award during the conference, held virtually May 25-27.

Eric Yau and Craig Zajac

Precisely announced the appointment of Eric Yau and Craig Zajac to the newly created roles of chief operating officer and senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary to the board, respectively. Yau will be responsible for Precisely’s software and data portfolio and will oversee the company’s transformation and integration initiatives. Yau has a  5-year career holding leadership positions at RMS, BMC Software, and IBM.

Zajac will manage the company’s worldwide legal function and its compliance programs. Before Precisely, Zajac held senior leadership positions at ClickSoftware (acquired by Salesforce) and VCE (a joint venture of EMC, Cisco, VMware, and Intel). Zajac has a 22-year background working with private and public tech companies.

Susan Yun

Information Builders, Inc. appointed Susan Yun as the company’s chief people officer. Yun has a 30-year career holding various leadership positions in human resources. As CPO, she will be responsible for personnel management and development. She will also manage the day-to-day responsibilities of the company’s human resources organizations worldwide.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to work with Information Builders as we focus on investing in people development and culture,” Yun said. “I’m looking forward to working with our great human resources team in support of the overall strategic direction of the organization.”
