Big Data Career Notes: April 2020 Edition

In this monthly feature, we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest career developments for individuals in the big data community. Whether it’s a promotion, new company hire, or even an accolade, we’ve got the details. Check in each month for an updated list and you may even come across someone you know, or better yet, yourself!


Suzanne Barth

Syniti appointed Suzanne Barth as its new executive vice president and chief people officer. Under this new role, Barth will work with CEO Kevin Campbell and the company’s senior leadership team on the company’s talent management initiatives and growth across its operations in North America, Asia, and Europe. Before Syniit, she was EVP and chief HR officer at GTY.

“I am excited to join Syniti to accelerate its journey as an employer of choice, providing an engaging, diverse and supportive workplace where people and business excel,” Barth said.  “I look forward to providing successful and sustainable practices and strategies while leveraging top talent and technology in today’s environment to help empower people to be their best.”

Paul Cormier

Red Hat’s Paul Cormier succeeds current IBM President Jim Whitehurst as president and chief executive officer of Red Hat. Cormier previously served as Red Hat’s president of Products and Technologies and has been with the company since 2001. During his tenure at Red Hat, Cormier has spearheaded over 25 acquisitions and assisted with developing a full and modern IT stack.

“When I joined Red Hat, it would have been impossible to predict how Linux and open source would change our world, but they are truly everywhere,” Cormier said. “The transformations I see happening in our industry are exciting, as they present new challenges and opportunities. The opportunity for Red Hat has never been bigger than it is today, and I am honored to lead the company to help our customers solve their challenges and to keep Red Hat at the forefront of innovation.”

Andrew Ettinger, Heather Federman, Roger Hale, and Peggy Tsai

BigID appointed Andrew Ettinger, Heather Federman, Roger Hale, and Peggy Tsai to senior leadership positions within the company. Andrew Ettinger was appointed as the next chief revenue officer to lead the company’s sales and business development efforts, bringing over with 23 years of experience as a VP of Sales.

Heather Federman was appointed as the company’s VP of Privacy and Policy to lead the initiatives related to privacy evangelism, internal compliance, and industry collaboration. Hale has a 35-year career in information security and is taking the role of the chief security officer at BigID. Hale is responsible for leading the initiatives related to security and risk management, internal compliance, and product innovation.

Peggy Tsai was selected for the position of VP of Data Solutions. She has an 18-year career in data management, stewardship, and governance in the financial services industry. Tsai is now responsible for leading company initiatives related to data governance and analytics.

Ed Fiore and Bruno Hald

Quantum Corp. announced the addition of Ed Fiore and Bruno Hald, establishing two general manager positions with P&L responsibility to lead the company’s primary and secondary storage product lines. Fiore will serve as VP and GM of Quantum’s Primary Storage division. As GM, Fiore will continue to develop source code and intellectual property that Quantum acquired from Atavium, where Fiore was the co-founder and CEO.

Bruno Hald was promoted to VP and GM of the company’s Second Storage division. He has been with Quantum for over 25 years and currently leads the engineering teams for the archive and data protection product portfolio. AS VP and GM, he will use his experience to address customer’s needs in the secondary storage space.

Herfini Haryono and Joe Lee

OmniSci’s Asia initiatives will be led by Joseph (Joe) Lee and Herfini Haryono. Lee will lead the company’s Asia initiatives as VP of Global Sales alongside newly appointed VP of Industry Verticals Haryono. Together,  they will lead a field support team based out of Singapore.  Lee has a 20-year career building sales organizations and has held senior leadership APAC sales positions at Snow Software and Kinetica in Singapore.  Haryono has served as a CIO, CTO, and board member of multiple technology companies throughout Indonesia. Before joining OmniSci, she was managing director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia.

“OmniSci is a leader and innovator with a well-differentiated platform, and I’m thrilled to join the team,” said Lee. “I’m looking forward to helping the company gain increased traction in Asia and drive an ambitious global sales plan.”

Ed Lenta and Greg Taylor

Databricks announced Ed Lenta and Greg Taylor are joining the company under senior leadership positions. Lenta is joining as the senior vice president and general manager for the Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) region and will be based out of Australia. Lenta is responsible for expanding the company’s customer-facing teams and support organizations with data teams accelerating innovation and attaining AI achievement. Lenta joins Databricks from Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he led their business across the APJ region.

Greg Taylor is taking the role of regional vice president of Australia and Southeast Asia. Prior to Databricks, Taylor led the APJ region for New Relic, where his team is crediting for growing the business at over 50% CAGR with both enterprise and digital-native customers.

Luka Mucic

SAP’s Chief Financial Officer Luka Mucic’s contract has been extended until March 2026. Since July 2014, Mucic has been a member of the SAP SE Executive Board but joined SAP’s legal department in 1996.  Among his responsibilities at SAP, he oversees the company’s financial and administrative areas. He holds a joint executive MBA from Mannheim Business School in Germany and ESSEC in Paris, France, as well as a master’s degree in law from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.

“I would like to thank Hasso Plattner and the SAP Supervisory Board for the trust they place in me,” Mucic said. “Challenging times lie ahead, and SAP is well prepared to weather them. I am extremely pleased that I can continue to play an active role in shaping both SAP’s future and that of our customers.”

Bob Muglia

Fivetran announced the addition of Bob Muglia to its board of directors. Muglia most recently served as Snowflake’s CEO playing a major role in the company’s growth and fundraising initiatives. He will advise Fivetran through the company’s expansion phases.

“Fast, accurate, and reliable access to business data are more important than ever. In today’s world, every SaaS and the internal application contains critical data that is needed for optimal decision making. Fivetran makes it easy and cost-effective to connect all of these data sources to a modern cloud data warehouse,” said Muglia. “The team at Fivetran have created a truly unique product that, while complex to engineer, is as simple to operate as it is reliable. It’s no surprise they’re now the fastest-growing data integration provider, and I expect that position to grow as they are poised to become a pivotal player in the cloud ecosystem.”

Tom Reilly

Tom Reilly joined OmniSci’s board of advisors. Reilly most recently served as CEO of Cloudera during its investment from Intel and subsequent IPO. Reilly has over 30 years of experience, adding market value to companies like ArcSight, Jive Software, and Eloqua. At ArcSight, he led the company’s IPO and subsequent sale to HP as CEO. He’s also held executive leadership roles at IBM and  HP.

“OmniSci has pioneered a new approach to analytics that I believe will be transformational. Its applications are broad and immensely valuable for analysts and decision-makers at the most important fronts of data analytics and data science,” Reilly said. “I foresee significant growth opportunities and, as such, will be doing all I can to help the company meet its ambitious goals.”

Peter Stadler

Teradata tapped Peter Stadler for the new role of country manager in Switzerland. He has been responsible for the business in Switzerland since March 2020 and brings more than 20 years of managerial experience in the IT industry. Before Teradata, Stadler held various leadership positions at Opentext, where he was responsible for the markets in Greece, Italy, Malta, Austria, Switzerland, and Cyprus. Stadler aims to increase Teradata’s growth in Switzerland, create jobs, and be a strategic partner for corporate customers.

“We want to show Swiss companies that data is the real asset in today’s world and contributes to the measurable success of our customers,” Stadler said. “Teradata is exactly the right business partner for today’s data society. We support our customers in obtaining answers from data analyses so that they can adapt their business to new requirements at any time.”

Sandeep Uttamchandani

Unravel Data announced the addition of Sandeep Uttamchandani as its chief data officer and VP of Engineering. Uttamchandani is responsible for furthering the company’s goal to optimize its data apps and data pipelines. Notably, he will focus on driving the company’s cloud and machine learning workloads innovations. Uttamchandani has a 20-year career and most recently served as the chief data architect and global head of data and AI at Intuit QuickBooks.

“My career has always been focused on developing customer-centric solutions that foster a data-driven culture, and this experience has made me uniquely prepared for this new role at Unravel. I’m excited to help organizations boost their businesses by getting the most out of their modern data workloads,” Uttamchandani said. “In addition to driving product innovations and leading the data and engineering team, I look forward to collaborating directly with customer CDOs to assist them in bypassing any roadblocks they face in democratizing data platforms within the enterprise.”
