COVID-19 Roundup: Dashboards, Therapeutics, Data Lakes & More

As the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps the globe, big data and AI have emerged as crucial tools for everything from diagnosis and epidemiology to therapeutic and vaccine development. Here, we collect the latest news in how big data is fighting back against COVID-19.

Google Cloud and HCA Healthcare team up on an open COVID-19 data platform

Healthcare provider HCA Healthcare announced a partnership with Google Cloud to create the COVID-19 National Response Portal. The portal, which aims to promote data-sharing about the pandemic, will be operated by SADA Systems. Healthcare providers will be able to share and display anonymous, aggregated metrics from their hospitals to show a real-time view of COVID-19 analytics. Rice University uses public health data to create an interactive COVID-19 map for Texas

A team of researchers at Rice University’s Spatial Studies Lab used public health data to create an interactive map of COVID-19 metrics in Texas, including number of cases, hospital bed utilization rate, intensive care beds, and more. To create the dashboard, they leveraged code from Esri. The researchers are planning to add further metrics, including the number of available nurses. Oracle deploys COVID-19 Therapeutic Learning System

Oracle announced that over the last few weeks, it built a tool called the COVID-19 Therapeutic Learning System. The system helps physicians and patients record the effectiveness of various drug therapies, including much-discussed therapeutic options like hydroxychloroquine and Remdesivir. The project was a collaboration between Oracle and a number of government agencies, including the National Institute of Health and the Food and Drug Administration. To read more, click here.

AWS launches public COVID-19 data lake

Amazon Web Services has announced that it is making available a data lake for COVID-19 analysis. The data lake includes metrics like case tracking data from Johns Hopkins and the New York Times, hospital bed availability from Definitive Healthcare and over 45,000 COVID-19 research articles. Researchers can also conduct analyses of the data in the cloud, saving the time that would be spent downloading the data. To read more about Amazon’s data lake, click here.

Copley uses Qlik to design a tool tracking COVID-19 and its effects

The Copley Consulting Group used the Qlik platform to aggregate data and design an application that tracks the spread and effects of COVID-19. In particular, the application tracks effects across health sectors, financial markets and the environment. The data in play includes data from the WHO, the EPA, and more, and the application delivers daily, weekly, and monthly insights.
