WANdisco Looks to Accelerate Multi-Cloud Data

As data whizzes from one cloud in one location to another, distributed computing platforms are emerging to help ensure data are consistent and readily available where and when needed.

That’s among the goals of the latest version of data fusion specialist WANdisco’s (LSE: WAND) platform, dubbed LiveData for MultiCloud, which was made generally available this week. The distributed data platform is billed as making data accessible and accurate while migrating to the cloud and between hybrid cloud deployments.

The approach works by continuously replicating data across multiple cloud regions and storage systems, the company said Wednesday (Jan. 16). The platform is built on WANdisco’s proprietary “distributed coordination engine” designed to move data between multiple datacenters and cloud providers. (The company said it recently obtained a blockchain patent covering its DConE replication technology.)

The company is betting that the shift to multi-cloud deployments will continue to accelerate, citing estimates that the shift to multiple cloud providers will create a $4.4 billion market by 2022.

“There’s a growing demand for new technologies to replace manual operations and legacy data protection tools which are prone to a variety of risks,” the company asserted in releasing its data-in-motion platform.

LiveData aims to allow companies “to select specific clouds for specific jobs to maximize business performance,” added David Richards, CEO and co-founder of WANdisco, San Ramon, Calif.

Along with big data migrations to the cloud, the platform is promoted as enabling continuous data replication at petabyte scale across multiple clouds. Availability is increased via reduced latency and infrastructure breakdowns.

WANdisco established its data chops with NonStop Hadoop, which provided very fast and reliable data replication for enterprises like banks that required strong high availability and disaster recovery capabilities within its Hadoop clusters.

It launched its flagship Fusion platform in 2015, targeting the Hadoop market with real-time data replication beyond Hadoop clusters to include HDFS-compatible file systems.

More recently, it has been extending Hadoop services beyond distributing data across multiple data lakes via a package of Hadoop offerings designed for multi-cloud environments, including Hive, BigSQL, Ranger, Knox and others.

It has also added support for multi-cloud object and blob storage.

From a users’ standpoint, the LiveData framework released this week makes it appear that data reside on single server, moving across a local network with little or no latency. In fact, the data is moving across a distributed environment in which servers may be thousands of miles apart.

WANdisco said it multi-cloud initiative includes support for a variety of cloud object storage services, including Amazon Web Services S3, Microsoft Azure Blob, and Google Cloud Storage.
