Microsoft Joins SnapLogic Investors

SnapLogic Inc., the purveyor of a platform designed to integrate data and applications, said it has completed a Series E funding round that includes Microsoft.

Along with Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), SnapLogic said Thursday (Dec. 10) its latest funding round that raised $37.5 million also included new investor Silver Lake Waterman. They joined existing investors that include Andreessen Horowitz, Ignition Partners and Triangle Peak Partners.

SnapLogic, San Mateo, Calif., said the cash infusion would be used to expand its global operations.

The startup launched its big data and cloud integration platform in July 2013 and claims more than 400 customers for its integration platform-as-a-service. The platform targets enterprises seeking to integrate their cloud and on-premise infrastructure as a means of deploying big data and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

“This new round of funding allows us to continue to build on our momentum and capitalize on the $500 billion cloud, big data and Internet of Things market opportunity,” SnapLogic CEO Gaurav Dhillon noted in a statement. Data industry veteran Dhillon founded SnapLogic in 2007.

The startup announced a $20 million funding round in October 2014. To date, SnapLogic has raised about $97.5 million.

The startup is looking to move up in a crowded field of data and cloud integrators that includes IBM (NYSE: IBM), Oracle (NYSE: ORCL), Talend and TIBCO. Current customers for its integration platform service include: Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE); pharmaceutical giants AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN), Merck (NYSE: MRK) and Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO); CapitalOne (NYSE: COF); Verizon (NYSE: VZ); and retailers such as Target (NYSE: TGT).

By providing a platform that connects data to applications, APIs and the emerging IoT, the startup said its platform could accelerate the adoption of cloud-based applications like Salesforce.

The Microsoft investment in SnapLogic appears to solidify an existing collaboration designed to expand connectivity to data services and analytics running in the Microsoft Azure cloud. The partners announced new capabilities in September for delivering application and data integration for Microsoft’s Cortana Analytics Suite.

The initial product integrations include connectors, or “Snaps,” for the Microsoft Azure SQL data warehouse, SQL database and Azure “blob storage.” The partners also said SnapLogic’s “Azureplex” hybrid execution framework could be deployed on Azure as well as within Azure Hindsight for big data analytics applications.

CEO Dhillon said the goal of the partnership was to provide “self-service connectivity between data sources and powerful big data analytics in the cloud.” He added that the SpanLogic integration platform combined with the Cortana Analytics Suite would result in a predictive “analytics-as-a-service” capability for enterprises.

Earlier this year, SnapLogic announced support for the Azure SQL data warehouse designed to aggregate and store big data in the cloud. The approach is designed to store data at cloud-scale while independently scaling the required computing resources.
