Teradata Acquires Revelytix, Hadapt

Teradata Corp., the analytic data platform vendor, said it has expanded its big data portfolio with a pair of recent acquisitions.

Teradata, based in Dayton, Ohio, said July 22 it has acquired the assets of Revelytix, an information management specialist, along with big data technologists and intellectual property from Hadapt. The Revelytix deal was completed on July 16; the Hadapt acquisition on July 17, Teradata said.

Terms of the two acquisitions were not disclosed, the company said, because they are not contractually “material to Teradata.” The new employees and intellectual property acquired in the deals will become part of Teradata Labs.

In a statement announcing the acquisitions, Scott Gnau, president of Teradata Labs, stressed the new assets would help extend the company’s Unified Data Architecture. The framework is billed as allowing users to access and manage their data.

Teradata said the Revelytix acquisition gives it new data management and preparation tools in Hadoop. That could help address concerns about data governance and understanding metadata in Hadoop, the company said.

The company recently released its Teradata Portfolio for Hadoop 2 aimed at reducing the cost of Hadoop deployment and management. The tool also seeks to address challenges related to leveraging diverse datasets stored in Apache Hadoop.

An unspecified number of Hadapt engineers also will join Teradata Labs to help advance its Unified Data Architecture. Hadapt, based in Cambridge, Mass., claims to be the first big data vendor to develop an analytic platform that natively integrates SQL with Apache Hadoop.

Founded in 2011, Hadapt’s core technology stems from research at Yale University computer science department conducted by company co-founders Daniel Abadi and doctoral candidate Kamil Bajda-Pawlikowski. The third co-founder and CEO is Justin Borgman, a student at Yale’s School of Management

Prior to its acquisition by Teradata, the big data startup had raised $17 million in venture funding, according to the company’s web site.

The Revelytix management tools focus on integrated metadata, lineage and data wrangling, or formatting of raw data.

Revelytix, based in Cockeysville, Md., is the developer of a Hadoop metadata management solution called Loom. It is billed as allowing data scientists to prepare big data for advanced analytics by automatically discovering datasets, generating metadata on datasets and tracking the lineage of operations in Hadoop.

The company was founded in 2006 by CEO and Chairman Michael Lang. Revelytix initially built data management software for the US Defense Department. As Hadoop emerged, the company ported some of its core technology to that big data platform via Loom.

Teradata was among Revelytix cloud and big data partners prior to the July 16 acquisition.

In a June blog post, Teradata’s Gnau indicated the company was looking to expand its support for Hadoop in areas like data access and management.
