VoltDB to Utilize Progress DataDirect OpenAccess SDK

June 29 — Progress today announced that VoltDB, an in-memory operational database and the leader in fast data, has selected Progress DataDirect OpenAccess SDK to increase access to business intelligence (BI) tools that allow VoltDB customers to visualize and access fast-moving data.

Developers and the companies they support, fresh from efforts to deal with Big Data, face a new challenge: Fast Data. Fast data is the front end of Big Data, and presents opportunities to extract value from fast-moving data in real time. VoltDB handles the most challenging workloads and operations at tremendous speeds with limitless scalability and zero data loss. In addition to high-write workloads and per-event decisioning, VoltDB’s customers want to visualize and access fast-moving data through standard analytics and business intelligence (BI) solutions such as Tableau and MicroStrategy.

To enable that connectivity, VoltDB developed their new ODBC driver using the Progress DataDirect OpenAccess SDK, the industry’s leading custom driver development kit. DataDirect OpenAccess SDK makes any data source SQL accessible via common standards such as ODBC, JDBC and ADO.Net and enables developers to rapidly implement data-source specific code. VoltDB chose the Progress DataDirect OpenAccess driver development kit because of the unquestioned leadership and success demonstrated by Progress and their DataDirect technology within the market, as well as the enterprise class features including security, performance, reliability and scalability not found in other drivers or SDKs in the market.

“Performance, scalability and high availability is absolutely critical to our end users,” said John Piekos, vice president of engineering, VoltDB. “The VoltDB database is highly-available and horizontally scalable. Nodes in the database cluster can be removed or added online, with 24×7 up-time. After an extensive evaluation of solutions available in the market, we decided to build the VoltDB ODBC driver with the DataDirect OpenAccess SDK. It was the only company and solution we found that ensured the performance and high availability required by our end user backed by an enterprise class company with 24×7 world wide support that we needed to support our customers.”

Progress DataDirect OpenAccess SDK allowed VoltDB to reduce its time to market by 50 percent, develop a prototype in a month, and launch the new driver in just three months. In addition, VoltDB has several customers evaluating the new DataDirect ODBC driver.

“In today’s ever expanding database market, vendors and SaaS application providers quickly realize they need to provide ODBC, JDBC, ADO.Net and OData database access so customers can access this data from their existing BI and ETL infrastructures,” said Michael Benedict, President of Data Connectivity and Integration, Progress. “After they attempt to build drivers using small vendor tools or SDKs with flashy websites and lots of promises, they realize they need an enterprise quality driver once their database gains traction in the enterprise. They turn to Progress for the DataDirect technology because it offers the most robust set of drivers already embedded in and tested with almost every major BI and integration vendor in the market. Working with us, they get the highest quality driver, robust test infrastructure and know it will work with every ISV application they encounter. All this is backed by Progress 24×7 world-wide phone support, designed to help customers be successful.”
