UC Irvine Extension Announces New Big Data Specialized Studies Program

IRVINE, Calif.Aug. 26 — Successful businesses have become increasingly reliant on rapidly expanding amounts of data to remain competitive. With the increasing number of businesses in the workforce requiring employees to understand and harness to value of big data, the University of California, Irvine Extension announced today a new Big Data Specialized Studies Program. The fully online program provides individuals with the background needed to effectively collect and manage extremely large amounts of information, perform data-driven discovery and prediction, and extract value and competitive intelligence for their organizations. Designed for professionals across a wide range of industries, this program is beneficial for individuals interested in utilizing data to drive successful business results.

“In today’s highly competitive marketplace, having the ability to leverage a variety of ‘data’ can be what sets a successful business apart from the others,” said Dave Dimas, Ph.D., director of engineering, sciences, and information technology at UC Irvine Extension. “There is a very high demand for business professionals that have a proven ability to analyze and manipulate data that affects an organization’s bottom line.”

Big Data Specialized Studies Program participants will learn to turn existing large, structured and un-structured data sets into cohesive information then extract valuable insight to solve business issues. Program participants will use industry standard analytic tools, including Hadoop, Teradata, Knime, Aster, IBM-Netiza, HP-Veritca, Statistica, R, Python and Crystal Ball as part of their studies. Courses are taught by industry leading professionals who provide the strategies and skills needed to effectively collect and manage big data and perform data-driven discovery, prediction, and prescription. Students will also have the opportunity to develop big data architectural strategies for an organization and improve business processes efficiency and customer satisfaction.

For the fall quarter, a new online course is being offered:

  • “Introduction to Big Data” (Sept. 28 to Nov. 15) – This introductory course will help students navigate through the complex layers of big data and data warehousing while providing information on how to effectively think about using these technologies and architectures to design the next-generation data warehouse. Concepts covered include an introduction to big data, discussion of big data processing architectures, explanation of the integration of big data and data warehouses, and fundamentals of big data analytics. Examples will be used to assist students through an implementation of a big data solution.
