MapR Free On-Demand Training Now Includes Apache Spark

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 27 — MapR Technologies, Inc., provider of the top-ranked distribution for Apache Hadoop that integrates web-scale enterprise storage and real-time database capabilities, today announced at Spark Summit EMEA the availability of the first free Apache Spark course as part of a new series in its Hadoop On-Demand Training program. Apache Spark Essentials provides developers with the essentials for building Spark-based applications on Hadoop.

“The response to our free Hadoop On-Demand Training has been tremendous,” said Dave Jespersen, vice president, worldwide services, MapR Technologies. “Based on customer demand, we’ve now added Spark to our selection of comprehensive courses. This training complements MapR support of the entire Apache Spark stack, giving developers and enterprise architects the most choice, as well as production-proven reliability and performance for Hadoop and Spark big data applications.”

The Apache Spark Essentials course is available now and is the first in a series of Spark classes offered in the free Hadoop On-Demand Training program from MapR.   This new course introduces the benefits of Apache Spark for developing big data applications. In the first part of the course, developers will use the Spark interactive shell to load and inspect data. The curriculum includes various deployment modes for Spark where students will build and launch a standalone Spark application. The concepts are taught using scenarios that also form the basis of hands-on labs available for practice.

Additionally, MapR will release its second free Spark course, Build and Monitor Apache Spark Applications, later in the quarter.  The curriculum for this class includes working with Resilient Distributed Datasets (RDDs), using Spark SQL and DataFrames, and understanding the Spark execution model.

Students of the free MapR On-Demand Training program can apply the recently announced $500 of credit to spend on Google Cloud Platform services for completing labs. This incentive gives students an opportunity to complete Spark course lab exercises using Google’s industry-leading cloud infrastructure at no charge, further supporting Hadoop skills development.

More than 40,000 professionals have already enrolled in the free Hadoop On-Demand Training program from MapR.  Coursework includes the same level of depth and content as instructor-led training, with hands-on exercises, labs and quizzes that ensure an engaging and interactive experience for data professionals. The program also offers certification exams for different audiences, leading to certified Hadoop professional designations for developers, data analysts and administrators.
