Huawei to Deliver HPC Cluster for Apache Spark to University of Warsaw

AUSTIN, Tex.Nov. 18 — Huawei announced at SC15 that it will deliver a high performance computing (HPC) cluster for Apache Spark to Poland’s University of Warsaw Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM).

Huawei and the University of Warsaw agreed that the HPC cluster for Apache Spark will be installed at ICM’s new data centre facility in Warsaw, and will be among the largest installations for Apache Spark in Europe, comprising of more than 8,000 CPU cores, 43TB of aggregate RAM and 8PB of internal disk space.

The new HPC cluster is an integral part of ICM’s OCEAN Project for data and analysis and will be used by the Polish scientific community. Huawei will provide equipment to address the most demanding Big Data challenges of computation sciences, and will be used in the fields of earth sciences, medicine, health care, transportation, logistics, public safety, social sciences, as well as networking and information technology.

“Apache Hadoop and later Spark have now been used at ICM in projects for several years across a number of domains,” said Professor Marek Niezgódka, managing director of ICM. “We have decided to acquire a dedicated HPC system for Big Data workloads to address the growing demand for these kinds of computations, boost development of analytical teams and increase competences in the multi-level data analysis. I believe Huawei equipment will meet our requirements in developing new algorithms and methods of data analysis based on multicore, multiprocessor and heterogeneous computing architectures.”

This project will be the second HPC delivery by Huawei to ICM this year. In the first quarter of 2015, Huawei delivered a 250 node HPC cluster.

ICM is a leading research centre for computational sciences in Central and Eastern Europe and has become a pioneer in data science in the scientific community.

“We are proud to have ICM as a client and partner,” said Bin Hu, Country Manager of Polish Enterprise Business Group at Huawei. “We perceive High Performance Computing and Big Data as strategic directions for expansion of our Enterprise Business Group. The education sector is one of our priorities. Based on the scale of the projects we are deploying this year, Huawei is undoubtedly number one in this segment in Poland.”
