Hortonworks Certifies EDB Postgres Advanced Server

BEDFORD, Mass.May 4 — EnterpriseDB (EDB), the leading enterprise Postgres database company, today announced EDB Postgres Advanced Server, an enhanced version of PostgreSQL for mission-critical enterprise workloads, has been certified for the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP). Combining EDB Postgres with HDP provides organizations with new capabilities to integrate existing data management systems with data in Hadoop clusters for greater analysis and actionable insights.

EDB’s Hadoop Data Adapter for EDB Postgres Advanced Server brings the ability to combine data in traditional corporate systems with big data from multiple data sources stored in Hadoop installations. Customer sentiment data from social media, clickstream data from online properties, machine and sensor data, and global logistics data is commonly stored in Hadoop clusters. These sources generate huge volumes for traditional, relational systems and the data is collected in an unstructured fashion because analysis tends to follow collection and storage. Combining this data with corporate transactional information for analysis, using EDB Postgres Data Adapter (based on Postgres Foreign Data Wrapper technology) represents a powerful opportunity for finding new efficiencies in operations or customer-driven revenue programs.

“Providing a certified integration with Hortonworks Data Platform removes complexity and risk from the task of integrating the strengths of Hadoop for analysis of Big Data with the system of record in EDB Postgres Advanced Server,” said Lenley Hensarling, Senior Vice President for Strategy and Product Management, EDB.

The components of an installation featuring EDB Postgres, made simpler because of certification, include the following:

  • Hortonworks’ HDP, a comprehensive open source data platform with management, access, governance, integration, security, and operations components pre-integrated to ease deployment and management of Hadoop clusters.
  • Open source Apache YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), a generic resource manager central to HDP that supports the processing of multiple applications in a customized manner. By becoming certified for HDP, EDB Postgres Advanced Server also became officially YARN Ready certified.
  • EDB Postgres Advanced Server, a version of PostgreSQL enhanced with enterprise-class performance, scalability, security, manageability, integration, and compatibility capabilities. Its Database compatibility for Oracle facilitates migrations to enable organizations to reduce costs and reuse investments in strategic initiatives.
  • The Foreign Data Wrapper for Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS_FDW), developed by EDB, is a data adapter for EDB Postgres and is available on GitHub. FDWs are a feature for connecting external data stores to Postgres and enable applications to query this data with SQL as if it were native Postgres data.
